Clean Label Browns Lead the Fall Lipstick Palette

Share

This fall, the return of brown lipstick comes with a clean-label makeover, as beauty brands deliver rich shades in formulations free from synthetic additives and aligned with wellness values.

The brown lip has returned for fall, but this time, it is dressed in transparency. No longer just a shade associated with the grunge aesthetic of the 1990s, the new wave of chocolate, chestnut, and caramel tones is finding its footing in formulas that promise both sophistication and safety.

With so much emphasis on wellness lifestyles — from farm-to-table dining to eco-friendly fabrics — is lip color the final frontier?

“I find myself between extremes at the moment,” makeup artist Alex Levy told Allure. “Clients either want to feel comfortable with themselves — polished but without straying from their established beauty norms — or want to completely push the boundaries and transform.”

Clean-label lipsticks — crafted without parabens, phthalates, or synthetic dyes — are setting the standard for beauty’s seasonal statement. The appeal goes beyond color: consumers are increasingly searching for products that match their values, and brands are responding by offering pigments sourced from minerals, botanicals, and food-grade ingredients.

How to wear brown lip color

Runways this fall showed models in neutral, earthbound shades, pairing minimalist silhouettes with lip colors that felt grounded and confident. Brown lipstick has always been about attitude, but how you pull it off depends on a few factors.

“Usually the rule of thumb is to pick a cool-toned lipstick if you have a cooler, blue undertone or fairer skin, and opt for a warm-toned lipstick if you have warm or olive undertones and deeper skin,” Kasey Spickard, a professional makeup artist, told Glamour. He says a cool-toned hue has a nostalgic ’90s vibe, while warmer cocoa shades can feel more seasonal. Whichever mood you’re going for, Spickard says that all skin tones and undertones look great in brown.

And Spickard says don’t be afraid of the lip liner. “Liner is your friend — take any brown lip liner you have, and cool it off with a neutral brown … and you’re in business,” he says.

Lighter, nude browns will give you a more natural finish, makeup artist Brielle Pollara told Glamour, “while deeper browns, especially those that have a matte finish, make a statement.” Spickard says when looking for brown lip shades, look for color to be consistent and not patchy, “which can happen with a lot of brown lipsticks.”

Whether it is a velvety matte cocoa or a glossy burnt sienna, the brown lip for fall has shifted from nostalgic accessory to modern ritual, and this time, the shade tells a bigger story.
