From Heretic’s nocturnal Black Salt to Michelle Pfeiffer’s Jake’s House, these clean coast-inspired perfumes bring summer’s briny sea salt, seaweed, driftwood, and mineral accords front and center even when the season’s gone.

While summer might be firmly in the rearview mirror, you can recall its magic with more than just your photo library or memories. If you’re already longing for the tightness of salt drying on skin after a late swim or the sun-warmed grain of a boardwalk and the cool, mineral smell of rocks as the tide pulls back, you may also be in the market for a sea-inspired perfume. And you’re in luck: a growing number of clean fragrance houses now build perfumes around those details, pairing sea salt, seaweed, and driftwood accords with formulas made without phthalates or parabens.

Salt, driftwood, and mineral scents also make a practical case for keeping summer in rotation into fall. Most pair their salt and sea notes with warmer bases of driftwood, sandalwood, musk, or labdanum, which gives them enough depth to wear with a light jacket in October as easily as with a swimsuit in August.

Transparency carries particular weight in fragrance, where federal rules allow fragrance ingredients to be listed simply as “fragrance” on a label, leaving a complex formula undisclosed. Michelle Pfeiffer built Henry Rose around the opposite approach when she launched the genderless line in 2019 with 100 percent ingredient transparency. “If you don’t know what’s in something, you can’t really be assured of its safety,” Pfeiffer said.

Also on this list, Abel builds its fully natural, petrochemical-free Cyan Nori partly with biotech-derived and upcycled ingredients, including tangerine essential oil recovered from food industry waste, while Ellis Brooklyn uses a vegan ambergris in place of the animal-derived original.

How perfumers capture the smell of sea salt

Perfumers can’t simply bottle the ocean, so coastal fragrances depend on careful construction. “Because salt is a flavor descriptor and not a tangible ingredient, it can’t be measured in a traditional fragrance sense,” Darryl Do, senior perfumer at Delbia Do Fragrances, told Marie Claire. Brands instead “rely on aquatic, ozonic, and mineral accords to recreate that feeling, so what you’re smelling isn’t salt itself but the impression of it,” he said.

That impression carries an emotional pull, according to Ellis Brooklyn founder Bee Shapiro. “There’s an escapist quality to aquatics that is so appealing,” Shapiro told Elle. “The fragrances conjure images of beach, watery zen and just overall well-being.”

The scents below all interpret the shoreline differently, from a stormy night to the first quiet morning of a vacation.

Heretic perfume.

Heretic Black Salt Eau de Parfum

Heretic describes Black Salt as “a ravishing distillation of the beach at night.” Lime and eucalyptus open over black pepper, jasmine sambac, and water lily sit alongside smoked sea salt, and seaweed, labdanum, and petrichor settle into a damp, mineral base. The formula is 86 percent naturally derived and blended in organic, non-GMO sugarcane alcohol.

Ellis Brooklyn Salt bottle.

Ellis Brooklyn Salt Eau de Parfum

The scent leans warmer and more floral than most aquatics, layering ylang-ylang and violet leaf absolute over Tahitian tiare and magnolia before drying down to musk, sandalwood, and a vegan ambergris. It is PETA-certified vegan and cruelty-free, with no parabens or phthalates.

Jake's House bottle.

Henry Rose Jake’s House Eau de Parfum

Pfeiffer’s marine citrus pairs a fresh marine top note with neroli, peony, and jasmine, then settles into ambroxan and musk — a scent that draws on memories of P grandfather’s North Dakota home, and its watery, softly honeyed finish makes it the easiest everyday option here. Jake’s House is EWG Verified, Cradle to Cradle Certified, and hypoallergenic, and the first fine fragrance to earn EWG Verification.

Skylar bottle.

Skylar Salt Air Eau de Parfum

Skylar’s Salt Air opens with Italian bergamot, sea salt, and seaweed, moves through cotton blossom, water lily, and cyclamen, and finishes on driftwood, vanilla, and musk. Hypoallergenic, vegan, and cruelty-free, made without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, or mineral oils. It also comes as a ten-milliliter rollerball.

Bottle.

Abel Cyan Nori Eau de Parfum

Abel calls Cyan Nori “a salty sweet aquatic,” pairing tangerine and white peach with musk over a base of nori. The formula is 100 percent natural and petrochemical-free, built partly from upcycled materials such as tangerine essential oil recovered from food industry waste.
