As the fully compostable Nyssa bag prepares for its global launch, it represents a broader shift toward fashion products that combine utility, aesthetic appeal, and environmental stewardship.
Material science company Balena and Lemon Jelly, a Portuguese footwear brand, have introduced the Nyssa bag, crafted from Balena’s proprietary BioCir Flex material. The bag is fully compostable and recyclable, offering a functional and durable alternative to traditional handbags. Launching at the end of November, this limited-edition accessory will be available exclusively online in two colors: deep black and amber yellow, both with a sleek matte finish.
The Nyssa launch highlights the potential of biomaterials in creating products that align with the principles of circularity. Designed to minimize environmental impact throughout its lifecycle, the Nyssa bag reflects a growing consumer interest in sustainable and functional fashion.

“With the Nyssa bag, we’re introducing BioCir Flex as a material that not only supports circularity but is also built to be functional and durable for everyday use,” said David Roubach, founder of Balena. “This isn’t just about creating a product that’s compostable or recyclable; it’s about bringing biomaterial innovation into the world of luxury and high-performance products making sustainable choices accessible without compromising on quality or durability,” he said adding that the collaboration is a product that’s as resilient as it is responsible, “demonstrating that circular fashion can be both beautiful and built to last.”
End-of-life solutions
One of the Nyssa bag’s standout features is its carefully considered end-of-life options. When the bag is no longer usable, consumers can return it to Lemon Jelly for recycling or send it to an industrial composting facility through Balena’s established network. This approach ensures the product leaves no waste, aligning with circular economy principles that aim to reduce resource extraction and landfill contributions.
José Pinto, CEO of Lemon Jelly, emphasized the importance of this collaboration: “At Lemon Jelly, we believe that innovation and sustainability must go hand in hand. We are proud to introduce Nyssa, the world’s first 100 percent compostable bag — a bold step toward a greener future. Taking this step only made sense with a partner who shares our values, like Balena.”

The bag owes its functionality to BioCir Flex, a biobased material derived from sustainable feedstocks such as castor beans and polysaccharides that Roubach says embodies the circularity vision, “proving that sustainability and durability can go hand in hand.” The material offers the flexibility and resilience of rubber while being biodegradable and suitable for scalable production techniques, including injection molding and extrusion.
Roubach says the bag is more than a product, “it’s a glimpse into the future of fashion — a future where materials are designed to be fully circular, functional, and durable for everyday life.” The innovation underscores Balena’s broader mission: to develop materials that combine environmental responsibility with the performance required for everyday use.
By designing products with their full lifecycle in mind, the company hopes to redefine the role of materials in luxury and high-performance goods. Known for its phthalate-free materials and eco-conscious designs, the brand has earned certifications from organizations like PETA and the Vegan Society, further cementing its position in the sustainable fashion space.
