With 2 New Initiatives, King Charles and Meghan Markle Advance Ethical Fashion: ‘Incredibly Important’

King Charles’ Net-A-Porter collaboration and Meghan Markle’s Cesta handbag investment spotlight advancements in sustainable materials and the need for more ethical fashion efforts.

King Charles is advancing his sustainable fashion efforts through a new partnership between luxury retailer Net-A-Porter and his charity, The King’s Foundation. This collaboration, which has launched a luxury capsule collection inspired by the Scottish Highlands, brings together a focus on sustainable materials and the support of British partisanship.

King Charles has been a prominent figure in the global conversation on environmentalism for decades. His initiatives often focus on sustainability, conservation, and ethical business practices. He has championed causes such as organic farming, renewable energy, and the repair movement, and his leadership continues to shape modern sustainability efforts.

The project, known as the Modern Artisan initiative, was initially launched in 2019 by Yoox Net-A-Porter and The King’s Foundation. Its aim is to provide emerging fashion and textile designers with opportunities to create luxury fashion with an eco-conscious approach. This latest collection was crafted by six U.K.-based artisans who spent six months at Dumfries House, a hub for the King’s sustainability efforts located in Ayrshire, Scotland.

The 13-piece collection, inspired by Queen Victoria’s watercolor paintings of the Scottish Highlands, merges historical and natural elements with sustainable fashion practices. Pieces such as lounge suits dyed with native heather, offering a tangible connection between fashion and nature.

Net-A-Porter’s managing director, Vikki Kavanagh, emphasized the importance of local production and the project’s commitment to using deadstock materials and working with smaller suppliers to ensure a more sustainable production process. The collection stands out for its use of traditional techniques such as hand smocking and hand sewing, which contrast with the modern, fast-fashion industry. It also integrates innovative Digital ID technology, allowing consumers to trace the garment’s production and receive post-purchase care guidance. This fusion of heritage craftsmanship and modern technology is emblematic of King Charles’ long-standing dedication to sustainability and ethical business practices.

“We have had to get creative in finding solutions for this capsule collection,” Kavanagh noted, underlining the collection’s thoughtful approach to minimizing waste and utilizing existing materials. This collaboration not only strengthens the “Made in the U.K.” movement but also aligns with the broader goals of King Charles’ environmental advocacy. His involvement with projects like this reflects his commitment to promoting sustainable practices across industries.

Meghan Markle backs Cesta Collective

On the other side of the Atlantic, Meghan Markle has continued her efforts to support sustainable and ethical fashion. In a recent interview with The New York Times, the Duchess of Sussex announced her latest venture as an investor in Cesta Collective, a handbag brand that creates handwoven basket bags through collaborations with women artisans in Rwanda. These handbags are then finished in Italy, bridging craftsmanship from two continents.

Markle expressed admiration for the brand’s founders, Erin Ryder and Courtney Weinblatt Fasciano, noting their commitment to ethical supply chains and high-quality products. “The quality of a brand’s products, the supply chain, ethical standards, and practices — these are all things that I consider before making an investment,” Markle shared. “With Cesta, I really started to understand how many women’s lives were being impacted and uplifted through their work. That was incredibly important to me.”

The brand gained significant attention when Markle was spotted carrying a Cesta handbag during a public outing with Prince Harry. According to Ryder, Markle’s decision to invest was motivated by shared values and a commitment to service. She explained that the Duchess’ involvement provides the resources to expand their artisan network and continue to create sustainable products.

Fasciano and Ryder are particularly proud of Cesta’s roots in Rwanda, where basket weaving holds a profound cultural significance. This tradition, often passed down from mother to daughter, became a symbol of resilience and unity following the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Today, it continues to provide income and empowerment for the women who craft these items, further aligning with Markle’s support for marginalized communities.

“We feel good about where we are and even better about where we are heading,” Ryder said, as the brand explores new product categories and continues its mission of creating products that are both beautiful and meaningful. “We are continually pushing towards a higher standard.”
