Summer can be a tricky time of year for fashion, but with a minimalist approach, these tips for men’s fashion can bring versatility to your wardrobe.
Early summer weather can range from being very hot, to quite cold, with unpredictable shifts in the weather. Because of this, creating a versatile wardrobe can be a bit difficult.
However, with these tips, you will be able to build a wardrobe that will fit into whatever weather you are faced with and keep you comfortable throughout the warmer summer months.
One of the best things you can do when choosing outfits, no matter what the season, is to keep it simple. The warmer months are all about being outdoors, going to the beach, going for walks; don’t burden yourself with overcomplicating simple garments.
1. Build around basics
The first thing you need for any wardrobe is a good selection of basics. T-shirts, mens shorts, a pair of jeans, and a couple of button-down shirts. Basics are important as they are items that you can use to create outfits, and they can be used on their own.
Stick with more neutral colors, such as whites, tans, and greys, as these are the easiest to match with each other, and provide a simple but sleek backdrop for an outfit.
2. Opt for lighter materials
When it comes to materials, you want to pick items that are lightweight and breathable. Two of the most popular ones would be cotton and linen, as they are comfortable but will still keep you warm if need be.
Avoid heavier materials, as depending on where you live, it is more than likely going to be too hot for most of the day to warrant heavy sweaters or jackets.
3. Keep it loose
Because it can get so warm, you want your clothes to be relatively loose-fitting. While this doesn’t mean everything you wear has to be baggy, stay away from skin-tight items that won’t let your body breathe.
Fitted and tailored shirts and shorts are ideal for a more formal look, while oversize t-shirts are great for a casual look. Just remember, oversized does not mean big; it simply means lightly larger but still fitted.
5. Shorts
It is time to put the pants away and bring out the shorts. A tailored pair of shorts can be worn on any occasion, whether it is to the office or on a date, and it all depends on what you pair them with.
For a formal look, a button-down shirt and a pair of Derbies or leather shoes, and for a casual look, a t-shirt and some sneakers are more than enough.
6. Shoes
For warmer months, you don’t want to be wearing heavy shoes or boots the entire time. Instead, opt for some lightweight sneakers, loafers, boat shoes, and sandals. You can also use your shoes to add a pop of color to your outfit or choose a complementary color for a more monochromatic look.
7. Lighter, not brighter
If you do want to add more color, a simple rule of thumb is to go lighter, not brighter. Think of the difference between regular blue jeans and acid-washed jeans; that is the type of look you should be aiming for.
This also means that you should include some pastels in your thinking, too, as you are able to incorporate a lot of colors without looking too colorful.
8. Layer
If you think it might be a bit chilly, a better option to warm up is to layer underneath your top and not above it. A vest is a brilliant item that will give your core some of the warmth you need without overheating your entire body.
A vest is also particularly useful if you are wearing a button-down shirt and you don’t want to ruin your look by wearing an ultra-casual jersey or jacket.
9. Lightweight jackets
Speaking of jackets, if you think you are going to need one, opt for a lightweight version. A thinner jacket will give you the little bit of warmth you need without completely overpowering you.
If you don’t want to wear a jacket, you should look into getting an overshirt. An overshirt is an item that isn’t thin enough to be a regular shirt but not thick enough to be a jersey or jacket. Instead, it is right in the middle and will give you just enough warmth when needed.
