Modern Meadow and Uncaged Innovations Make Their Luxury Handbag Debuts

Melina Bucher launches handbags made from Modern Meadow’s Innovera Suede as Loué Studio debuts Elevate, a bag range using a plant-based leather alternative from Uncaged Innovations.

German luxury label Melina Bucher has released a new range of handbags made from Innovera Suede, a next-generation biomaterial developed by New Jersey–based Modern Meadow. The collection — comprising the Loulou, Bailey, and Tessa East West Bag — marks Melina Bucher’s first use of the suede alternative. The launch comes as the new London-based Loué Studio is making its own bio-based debut: its first handbag made from Elevate, a grain-derived, plant-protein leather alternative developed by Uncaged Innovations.

Both launches highlight the pace of innovation in bio-fabricated materials as they move from laboratory development to commercial use. Modern Meadow’s technology is designed to fit into existing leather manufacturing systems, while Uncaged Innovations focuses on plant-based protein structures that replicate collagen, the component responsible for leather’s strength.

Innovera is produced from plant proteins, advanced biopolymers, and recycled rubber, with more than 80 percent renewable carbon content. Modern Meadow says the material replicates the soft texture of suede while improving durability, water resistance, and weight.

“Innovation centered on bioengineering, nature-inspired proteins, and commercial-scale solutions is essential to the future of fashion sustainability,” Dr. David Williamson, CEO of Modern Meadow, said in a statement. “By dedicating our resources to Innovera, we are positioning Modern Meadow to drive sustainable change and deliver the most advanced leather alternative available.”

Each bag in Bucher’s collection is handcrafted in the brand’s German atelier and available for pre-order at melinabucher.com. “With Innovera Suede, we bring together beauty, performance, and responsibility,” Melina Bucher, the label’s founder and creative director, said in a statement. “It demonstrates that handbags can be luxurious not despite sustainability, but because of it.”

Loué Studio debuts Elevate handbag in Spain

Loué Studio, founded by Elena Lisman earlier this year, will launch the Elevate Collection on November 12th, featuring its signature silhouette, the Mano Pochette, in two shades — Taupe and Dark Cherry. The bags are made by a two-person atelier in Ubrique, Spain, using materials including Mirum by NFW and Elevate. Melina Bucher debuted the Nubian bag earlier this year, which also used the Uncaged Innovations’ Elevate material.

“It’s an honour to bring such an extraordinary material to life,” said Lisman. “Out of all the handbag brands in the world, it wasn’t a heritage house or a global luxury group — it was a six-month-old, self-funded brand, with no team, no sustainability department, but with a clear vision and the determination to do things better.”

Lisman described Elevate as “rich in texture and colour,” adding that it performs comparably to animal leather in flexibility and structure. Each bag features organic cotton linings and stainless-steel buckles coated in 18-karat gold using a non-toxic PVD process.
