Stella McCartney’s New Falabella Bag Cleans the Air While You Wear It

Stella McCartney’s new Falabella bag features Airlite technology, turning fashion into a tool for air purification and highlighting the brand’s commitment to sustainable innovation.

Stella McCartney has introduced a new version of her renowned Falabella bag, now featuring an innovative Airlite coating that actively purifies the surrounding air. This development highlights McCartney’s ongoing commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology with sustainable fashion.

The label first introduced Airlite into its Winter 2024 runway collection, coating two of its iconic Falabella Tiny vegan tote bags in the material. “This pioneering innovation means these accessories are not only kinder animals, but people and planet — actively purifying the air from pollutants, bacteria and molds,” the label said on its website.

Along with the Airlite coating, the bags are made from vegan leather and featured recycled brass and recyclable aluminum diamond-cut chain, waxed GOTS-certified organic cotton lacing, and recycled polyester monogram lining.

Airlite is a patented technology that transforms surfaces into natural air purifiers. When applied, it utilizes semiconductor principles to generate electrical charges on the surface. These charges interact with water vapor and oxygen in the air, producing negative ions, according to the company. These ions neutralize pollutants upon contact, effectively cleansing the air. It’s made with 40 percent recycled materials.

The effectiveness of Airlite is significant. According to the company, “100 square meters of walls painted with Airlite is equivalent to planting 100 square meters of forest.” This means that surfaces treated with Airlite can significantly reduce pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) by up to 90 percent. Additionally, it eliminates up to ninety-nine percent of bacteria, molds, and viruses, contributing to healthier environments.

Airlite says its application is straightforward. It is a mineral-based paint that can be applied to various surfaces, both indoors and outdoors. Once applied, it remains effective for up to ten years, providing long-term benefits without the need for maintenance.

Stella bags: beacons of sustainability

Stella McCartney’s handbags have been a canvas for sustainable innovation, crafted entirely from vegan materials. The label’s Frayme and Falabella bags set the standard for luxury accessories free from animal products. Over the years, the brand has introduced various iterations that showcase novel materials and technologies, reflecting its commitment to eco-friendly fashion.

In July 2022, Stella McCartney launched the Frayme Mylo Bag, marking a significant advancement in sustainable fashion. This bag was crafted from Mylo, a mushroom-based leather alternative developed in collaboration with Bolt Threads. The Frayme Mylo Bag was the first commercially available mycelium bag, reflecting the brand’s dedication to innovative, eco-friendly materials.

In 2024, to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Falabella, Stella McCartney unveiled four new versions of the tote. These designs included options like boho cinnamon fringe and glam cracked silver, each crafted from sustainable materials. The linings were made from ocean plastic, and the chain handles were diamond-cut from recycled brass and recyclable aluminum. Italian artisans meticulously hand-assembled these bags, using organic cotton twine to lace the pieces together, underscoring the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability.

Later in 2024, Stella McCartney introduced the Peace and Dove collection, focusing on the ethical treatment of birds in the fashion industry. This line featured faux feathers and doves hand-painted on garments, utilizing innovative materials such as recycled nylon and electronics waste. The collection highlighted the brand’s dedication to cruelty-free and sustainable fashion practices.

In recent years, McCartney has intensified her efforts to reduce the environmental impact of her label. The company is on track to reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 46.2 percent by 2030 and aims to be net zero by 2040. Notable achievements include a 76 percent reduction in operational emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy across 68 percent of its sites.

Innovation is at the heart of McCartney’s sustainability strategy. The label has collaborated with startups to develop alternative materials, such as grape-based leather and forest-friendly rayon. These initiatives not only reduce reliance on traditional, environmentally harmful materials but also promote biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.

The introduction of the Airlite-coated Falabella bag exemplifies McCartney’s forward-thinking approach to sustainable design, integrating cutting-edge technology to create products that are both stylish and beneficial to the environment.
