She recommends applying SPF 30 or higher directly on hands and nail beds, and if you’re a gel devotee, protecting your hands with fingerless gloves or sunscreen at least 30 minutes before curing.

Processing, peeling, and when to pause

Dr. Stern likens nails to hair: both are made of keratin, and both can be over-processed. “That’s why the ‘burn’ of a UV lamp happens, because the nail has been over-processed, and then it’s more sensitive to light and heat exposure,” she explains. Repeated exposure to harsh removers, layers of gel, and rough handling leave nails brittle, splitting, and tender. It’s not subtle. You’ll see it. You’ll feel it.

This is where a bit of honesty helps. Gel manicures can be beautiful, efficient, durable. But they’re not for everyone. “Some people can tolerate UV exposure to the nail just fine, while others really can’t,” Dr. Stern says. And that tolerance changes — depending on how well you’ve been treating your nails between appointments. If your nails feel thin or your cuticles sting, it’s probably time to reset.

Exfoliation, too, has its place. TikTok may have introduced the concept of using glycolic acid toners on the nail plate, but Dr. Stern cautions against treating your hands like your face. “You want a glycolic acid formulated for the nails,” she says. The payoff? Smoother texture, better product absorption, and far less brittleness.

When it comes to polish removal, go gently. Most polish removers contain solvents — the same ingredient in paint thinners. “The ingredient that most of us are most familiar with is acetone. The reason people use acetone in nail polish remover is that it’s the fastest-working solvent, but it’s also the harshest,” says Dr. Stern. Her pick: a remover with propylene carbonate, which is just as effective, far less damaging.

It’s not just polish remover or gel that can cause unnecessary damage — your clipper might be to blame, too. Using a dull or poorly designed clipper, especially one meant for fingernails, on thick toenails can lead to painful splits, cracks, or even ingrown nails. For toenails, opt for a heavy-duty, straight-edged clipper for thick toenails designed to handle thicker keratin. These provide cleaner cuts and reduce pressure on the nail plate. If you’re noticing jagged edges or discomfort post-trim, it’s likely time to upgrade your tool. A small change in hardware can make a big difference in maintaining the integrity of your nails.

Whether you’re practicing or simply ingredient-conscious, it’s a quietly revolutionary shift in the polish world.
