‘Clean’ sunscreen is an unregulated term, and dermatologists say a properly applied dimestore mineral SPF protects as well as a $48 prestige one.
The sunscreen wall at any drugstore is engineered to induce paralysis: dozens of bottles, a spread of prices from under $10 to over $100, and a scramble of adjectives — “clean,” “reef safe,” “mineral,” “sensitive” — that sound meaningful and mostly are not. It helps to know, before you spend, that the marketing and the protection are two different things. “Pricier sunscreens aren’t necessarily more effective than their cheaper counterparts,” the dermatologist Melanie Palm of Art of Skin MD told HuffPost. “In fact, there are plenty of budget-friendly sunscreens that are more effective than pricier options.”
That is because the part of a sunscreen that does the work, the active filters, is regulated and finite. “Expensive and cheap sunscreens should provide the same degree of sun protection,” the dermatologist Brendan Camp said in the same report. What the extra money buys is texture, finish, and add-ons like antioxidants, not a higher wall against ultraviolet light. “Clean” is the softest of the words on the shelf, an unregulated marketing term, as the cosmetic chemist Jen Novakovich has pointed out, no more enforceable than “reef safe” or “hypoallergenic.”
In practice, a “clean” facial sunscreen almost always means a mineral one, built on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide rather than chemical filters. The trade-off is cosmetic. “In the world of clean beauty, physical sunscreen is often more desired,” the cosmetic chemist Ginger King noted. “However, it also may leave a white cast on darker skin tone, known as ‘ghosting.'”
Whether labeled “clean” or “reef safe” does not guarantee a mineral formula. Some clean-positioned sunscreens are chemical formulas that have simply dropped oxybenzone and octinoxate, which is why the active-ingredients box is the only reliable tell. If it lists avobenzone, homosalate, or octocrylene, it is a chemical filter, however green the bottle around it looks.
What actually matters is simpler than the shelf suggests. “The most important thing to look for is the SPF number,” the dermatologist Shari Sperling said. “The higher the better, but you want at least an SPF of 30.” Pair that with a “broad-spectrum” label, which the dermatologist DiAnne Davis explained protects “from both UVA and UVB rays, which both can cause skin cancer,” apply enough, and reapply. Most people apply far less than the amount tested on the label, which is part of why dermatologists lean toward higher SPF numbers as a margin of error. Every clean drugstore option below clears that bar for a fraction of the prestige price.
The best clean mineral drugstore sunscreens for your face
A properly applied SPF 30 protects the skin whether it cost $12 or $48, and the premium buys texture and finish, not a higher wall against ultraviolet light. If a sheer prestige fluid is the one you will wear every morning without fail, it earns its price; if a $12 Alba is, that one does. “Most of all, find a sunscreen that feels good on your skin,” the University of Texas dermatologist Adewole Adamson told PBS NewsHour, “because sunscreen will only work if you use it.” Each of these is a broad-spectrum mineral formula sold at mass retail, ranked here by the face and the budget it suits best.
