The 100 Most Sustainable Luxury Products of 2021

Share

Ethos has released The 100 Most Sustainable Luxury Products list—the first comprehensive list of its kind ranking the most sustainable luxury products of the past year.

The increasing demand for sustainability has led to an uptick in product offerings. But what’s the best of the best? Which products really live up to their promises?

This year, we looked at the most sustainable luxury products across fashion, jewelry, home, and beauty. The first step in identifying the Ethos 100 Most Sustainable Luxury Products was determining a clear and defined set of criteria to rate each of the products on the list. The bare minimum was that all products were ethically made with sustainable materials or ingredients and were entirely cruelty-free.

From there, each product was rated for its adherence to commitments in the following categories: Materials and Ingredients, Labor Standards, Shipping and Packaging Materials, Energy Usage, and Circularity Efforts.

The 5-Star Ranking

To achieve the Ethos 5-Star ranking the product had to show extensive, specific systems in place in all five areas. These brands went above and beyond the basics of each category and are setting themselves apart from their competitors in sustainability efforts and social responsibility initiatives.

These brands are not only embracing sustainable materials and ethical practices across their selections, but they also have effectively engaged in substantial usage of renewable and clean energy, such as commitments to using all wind and solar energy, LEED-certified facilities, and are actively offsetting their carbon emissions.

Circularity is also an important area for sustainability, criteria many brands do not yet have in place. Our 5-Star Brands are participating in circular efforts such as buyback programs, recycling old products and unused materials, and creating new products with the lifecycle in mind.

“This list came to fruition in the same way Ethos did; we knew there were luxury brands building sustainability into their core,” says Jill Ettinger, Ethos co-founder and editorial director. “We started with a clear-cut list of exemplary attributes and built a rating system around it. At the minimum, all products had to be ethically made with sustainable materials or ingredients.” It’s also the first comprehensive sustainable ranking list of its kind to only feature items made without any animal products or animal testing.

“It may sound strange to call the luxury market underserved, but when it comes to sustainability, that’s often the case,” Ettinger says. “The luxury market is valued at more than $5 trillion; that is immense purchasing power and influence. These brands need to shine a greater spotlight on their sustainability efforts. And according to our research, the luxury consumer wants to make the best choices for the planet. To them, sustainability is luxury.”

To celebrate the launch, Ethos is donating 100 trees to its nonprofit partner, The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation. The trees will be planted in Mococa, Brazil in 2022.

“When Ethos approached us about collaborating on one of our groundbreaking fruit tree plantings, we were thrilled to suggest an upcoming initiative to plant 100 life-sustaining trees for low-income families in Brazil later this year,” said Cem Akin, FTPF’s TreeEO. “Through this generous support, generations of families will have cleaner air to breathe and a healthy source of nutrition right in their backyards. We are so grateful to partner with Ethos in supporting sustainable, earth-friendly projects,” Akin said.
