Gstaad Palace Is the First Hotel to Purchase Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Swiss International Air Lines and the Gstaad Palace luxury Swiss hotel have announced a groundbreaking first-of-its-kind alliance around sustainable aviation fuel.

Gstaad Palace says it will use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for all its business travel via Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), making it the first-ever five-star luxury hotel to adopt such a sustainability-focused approach.

The move not only significantly minimizes the carbon emissions from Gstaad’s business travel but also considerably contributes to the promotion and progressive development of sustainable fuels.

“The Gstaad Palace and SWISS are premium brands reputed for their commitment to top-quality service and sustainability,” SWISS CEO Dieter Vranckx said in a statement. “I’m delighted that our new collaboration takes the aspiration to make travel more sustainable a significant step forward. The Gstaad Palace is truly playing a trailblazing role with this commitment, and we at SWISS hope that many more companies will follow suit.”

Andrea Scherz, the General Manager of the Gstaad Palace and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the “Leading Hotels of the World,” recently emphasized the hotel’s dedication to environmental stewardship.

“Since its inception in 1913, the Gstaad Palace has been acutely aware of its responsibilities in the sustainability domain,” said Andrea Scherz, the General Manager of the Gstaad Palace and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the “Leading Hotels of the World. According to Scherz, the family enterprise has an entrepreneurial mindset, and careful resource management has always been a key focus.

“We consistently strive, both within our premises and across the Saanenland region, to foster a sustainable and socially responsible relationship with nature and the environment. This new partnership with SWISS sends a strong signal to our sector and guests. By leveraging innovative technologies like SAF, we can contribute meaningfully to making travel more environmentally friendly,” Scherz said.

According to Scherz, the new partnership with SWISS demonstrates how innovative technologies like SAF can facilitate more environmentally friendly travel.

SWISS says it is fully committed to promoting SAF usage and supporting the growth of the fuel sector. Both SWISS and the Lufthansa Group are involved in numerous research initiatives and pilot projects, all aimed at accelerating the development of sustainable fuel technologies, specifically SAF offerings for their individual and corporate customers.

Currently, the SAF on the market is capable of reducing CO2 emissions by about 80 percent compared to traditional fossil fuels.

SWISS has already started offering a range of SAF products to its customers to help reduce the carbon emissions associated with air travel. The airline is expected to forge additional SAF partnerships with corporate clients, as these certified and externally validated SAF products have drawn significant interest from the corporate world.
