Tencel Giant Lenzing Debuts Circular Fibers to Protect Glaciers: ‘Transformative Change’

Austria’s The Lenzing Group has unveiled “Glacial Threads,” a pioneering approach aimed at safeguarding glaciers from the adverse effects of climate change.

Combining its sustainable materials with its commitment to conservation, Lenzing, best known for its Tencel and modal materials, says its cellulose-based fibers for geotextiles offer a sustainable shield for ice masses against melting. Originating from a successful trial on the Stubai Glacier, which demonstrated a significant reduction in ice melt, the project has expanded across Austrian glaciers, underscoring Lenzing’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its pivotal role in fostering circularity within the textile industry.

At the heart of the initiative is the transformation of geotextiles into fashionable garments, a testament to Lenzing’s innovative recycling processes that contribute to the industry’s shift toward sustainable practices. This endeavor not only addresses the urgent need to protect the planet’s glaciers from melting, but also propels the textile sector toward a more sustainable and circular economy. “We are delighted with the positive results and see the project as a sustainable solution for glacier protection – not only in Austria but also beyond the country’s borders,” Berndt Köll, Emerging Business Development at Lenzing, said in a statement.

According to Lenzing, the first phase of the pilot project saw the recycling of nonwovens made for geotextiles recycled into a fashionable “Glacier Jacket”. Lenzing’s innovation was recognized with the first-place award at the prestigious Swiss BIO TOP Awards, acknowledging its contributions to material innovations. The project also gained international visibility during the International Day of Forests celebrations at the United Nations Office in Geneva, where it was presented under the title “Glacial Threads: From Forests to Future Textiles.” This accolade underscores the global relevance of Lenzing’s efforts in promoting environmental conservation through sustainable material solutions.

“This pioneering innovation project brings together trusted like-minded companies and partners across the supply chain, demonstrating the companies’ shared vision and commitment to the circular economy,” said Florian Heubrandner, executive vice president commercial textiles at Lenzing. “The collaboration is a testament to the power of partnership; driving innovation and sustainability, reducing environmental impact and encouraging collaborative action against climate change for global impact across in the textile industry.”

Krishna Manda, vice president of corporate sustainability at Lenzing, further highlighted the urgency of addressing glacier melting amidst the climate crisis. Manda emphasized the project’s role in spurring transformative change. “As the climate emergency accelerates glacier melting, we are at a critical point requiring transformative change for global impact,” he said.
