Lenzing Sets Industry Standard with Ambitious Net-Zero Climate Goal: ‘The Basis for Long-Term Success’

Share

The Lenzing Group, a frontrunner in the production of eco-friendly fibers, has announced a major leap forward in its environmental commitments, aligning its climate objectives with the ambitious 1.5-degree Celsius target set by the Paris Agreement.

Austria-based Lenzing says the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), the leading effort in the validation of corporate emission reduction goals, has endorsed its enhanced targets. The materials giant behind fibers like Tencel and Modal, has now distinguished itself as the sole entity in the regenerated cellulosic fiber sector to possess a net-zero target that is scientifically validated.

Lenzing says it has pledged to slash its emissions from both direct operations and purchased energy by 42 percent, and its indirect emissions across the value chain by 25 percent, aiming for an absolute reduction of 1.1 million tons of CO2 by 2030. This significant increase from the previously set goal of reducing 700,000 tons underscores Lenzing’s dedication to exceeding its environmental responsibilities.

Stephan Sielaff, CEO of Lenzing, expressed the company’s determination to lead by example, highlighting the importance of ambitious goals and tangible actions in achieving long-term success. “At Lenzing, we have the ambition to positively change the textile and nonwovens industries,” he said. “This is precisely what makes a noticeable difference to other companies and is also the basis for long-term success.”

Christian Skilich, Chief Pulp Officer and Chief Technology Officer of the Lenzing Group, emphasized the company’s commitment to the global effort to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, saying it must be “the benchmark” for Lenzing’s corporate decision-making and actions. “We will continue to invest in energy savings and new technological developments and therefore I am confident that we are on the right track towards achieving our net-zero target by 2050.”

Lenzing’s approach to reaching these goals includes substantial investments in modernizing its production sites in Asia, transitioning to 100 percent renewable grid electricity in China and Indonesia, and enhancing energy independence at its Austrian locations. The acquisition of a biomass power plant and a contract for wind power supply in Austria are steps towards diversifying and stabilizing Lenzing’s energy sources.
