4 Timeless Styles in The Beatles ‘Get Back’ Documentary and How to Recreate Them Sustainably

Share

The journey to the final Beatles studio albums is documented in the new Disney+ ‘Get Back’ series. And so is the style. Here’s how to get the looks sustainably.

It’s hard to imagine a world before the final two Beatles’ studio albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be, but such a time did exist just a half-century ago. The birth of these records is the focus of the new Peter Jackson eight-hour Disney+ Get Back series.

Beatles fan or not, it’s impossible to take your eyes off of the comprehensive video time capsule that documents the lead up to their final two studio albums and that now-iconic rooftop performance. The series highlights the songwriting process, clashes within the band and management, and features appearances from keyboard player Billy Preston, as well as band wives Yoko Ono, Linda McCartney, Pattie Boyd, and Maureen Starkey.

And it documents another critical time stamp: the style. So much style.

If John, Paul, George, and Ringo don’t sell you on their brilliant songwriting processes, stick around if for no other reason than the outfits. The looks are as timeless as the music—filled with gorgeous colors, prints, vests, denim, and so many other great styles. Here’s how to get some of the best Beatles looks sustainably.

1. Vests

From suit vests to pullovers to Ringo’s Nehru vest, there’s quite possibly a vest in very scene of Get Back. And I’m not mad about it. You shouldn’t be either. Consider vests the hottest Beatles trend in January 1969—and the hottest trend missing from your closet in 2022, surely. Wear vests over tees, long sleeves, button-down shirts, or turtlenecks, and pair with denim, fitted slacks, or a skirt to complete the outfit. Check out this organic option from Eileen Fisher, this cardigan Everlane vest, or this Ann Demeulemeester modal button-up number and get back to looking effortlessly cool.

2. Fur and shag

That chilly January afternoon rooftop performance sees John and George, as well as Yoko and others milling around the scene in fur and shag. While the furs John and George wore weren’t likely sustainable—or ethical for that matter— there are fortunately lots of eco options these days that are both. Get John’s brown fur look with this Khaite faux fur coat and Givenchy delivers George’s black coat look here.

3. Bright colors

From Paul’s orange sweater to Billy Preston’s mustard blazer, and George Harrison’s ruffled purple shirt, colors were bright and bold in Get Back.

Green was especially prominent all over the Apple studios from the carpet to tees to Ringo’s ruffled green shirt. Recreate the look with this recycled nylon fluffy knit green turtleneck in bright green from Beatles’ descendant and sustainable design pioneer, Stella McCartney.

Stripes were also big like Billy Preston’s striped shirt and George’s unforgettable pink striped suit. Give the striped look a go with this green and white striped dress from Ganni in organic cotton poplin.

Ringo brings the color and style with a number of timeless looks like his red and white polka dot shirt. This Comme des Garcons’ ruched crepe polka dot dress is just the thing. Pair it with a dark blazer and knee-high boots. Or bag another one of Ringo’s looks: a floral print shirt. Pair with straight-leg denim and heels or a pencil skirt.

4. Monotone

While colors and patterns were abundant in Get Back, so were understated looks like Billy Preston’s simple black turtleneck and slacks. Give this Reformation turtleneck dress a go for a twist on the look.

John and Yoko match at the Apple Studio in white ensembles; Ono stuns in long sleeve pullover and wide leg pants like these pants from Mate the Label that pair with this boxy top. Lennon sports a short-sleeved white tee with a white vest and straight leg white pants for a relaxed, comfortable look.

Ringo wears a black suit with a big-collared black shirt. Give this cotton Stella McCartney shirt a go under a Racil Chalhoub black velvet blazer and pair with Stella’s Vivian pants.
