LanzaJet Opens the World’s First Ethanol-to-Jet Aviation Fuel Plant: ‘A Cleaner, Healthier, and Safer Future’

Share

The world’s first sustainable aviation fuel plant turning ethanol into jet fuel is open for business.

In Soperton, Georgia, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the opening of the world’s first ethanol-based alcohol-to-jet sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) commercial production plant. This facility, known as Freedom Pines Fuels, is a collaboration between LanzaTech, its subsidiary LanzaJet, Inc., and its partners. The opening of this facility is a significant step in the production and cost reduction of renewable jet fuel from ethanol.

The ribbon-cutting event saw the participation of high-profile government officials, including U.S. Department of Energy Deputy Secretary David Turk and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. The facility’s completion supports the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to clean energy and economic growth. Deputy Secretary Turk emphasized the facility’s importance.

“The completion of this facility highlights how the Biden-Harris Administration’s whole-of-government approach is helping build a cleaner, healthier, and safer future through American workers and homegrown clean energy solutions,” he said at the ceremony, adding that the plant is “a huge win for Georgia’s economy and a testament to the importance of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda in driving new economic opportunities to communities across the country and reinforcing our nation’s industrial might.”

Freedom Pines Fuels

The Freedom Pines Fuels facility is expected to produce nine million gallons of SAF and one million gallons of renewable diesel in its initial year. The project, supported by the Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technology Office (BETO) since 2016, promises not only environmental benefits through decarbonization but also significant economic growth. It is projected to contribute approximately $5 million in new wages and benefits, generate $70 million in annual economic activity, and create around 80 new jobs.

This facility plays a pivotal role in the DOE Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge, initiated in 2021. The challenge, a collaborative effort of the DOE, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and industry partners, aims to develop a comprehensive strategy for the large-scale production of SAF. The SAF Grand Challenge Roadmap Report, which lays out plans to expand SAF supply, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability, underscores the necessity of facilities like Freedom Pines Fuels for achieving SAF goals.

BETO, a part of DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, supports technology research, development, and demonstration projects. Its goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions effectively and sustainably by utilizing biomass and waste feedstocks across the U.S. economy.

LanzaJet, a leader in sustainable fuels technology, is committed to accelerating the energy transition and embracing the circular economy. With its patented alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) technology, LanzaJet is at the forefront of deploying SAF and other clean technologies critical to addressing the climate crisis and transforming the global economy.
