The Newest Trend In Baby Names for 2024: Is It Eco-Friendly?

Share

A new trend in baby names is emerging in 2024, reflecting a growing consciousness about the environment, according to the U.K.’s leading waste management company, Business Waste.

An analysis of 20,000 names found that names like David and Emma are not only popular but also linked to inquiries about sustainable practices, indicating a potential future of eco-awareness for these newborns, according to Business Waste.

The analysis focused on the frequency of names and the nature of “green” inquiries made by individuals. The top 50 most sustainable customer names were then cross-referenced with BabyCentre’s list of the most popular baby names in 2024, leading to the identification of David and Emma as frontrunners in this unique category. David, a name with biblical origins meaning “beloved,” tops the list, particularly in terms of recycling inquiries. For girls, Emma, meaning “whole” or “all-containing” and also enjoying popularity as per BabyCentre’s rankings, shows a strong interest in sustainability, especially around recycling questions.

This trend towards eco-friendly naming is part of a larger shift where nature is playing a more significant role in the selection of baby names, Business Waste says. Adam and Maria, names also with biblical roots, are gaining new significance in this green naming trend, resonating with families who value environmental stewardship. Zoe, which means “life”, is also becoming associated with sustainable living. Names like Hazel, derived from the hazel tree, and Oliver, related to the olive tree, are other notable mentions from the list, highlighting a preference for nature-based names.

Further research has identified 40 additional green baby names, indicating a broad range of nature-inspired choices for new parents. Among girls, names like Aurora, Luna, Lily, Hazel, Violet, Willow, and Ivy are not only popular, according to BabyCentre, but they also carry a natural essence. For boys, although fewer nature-inspired names are in the top rankings, names like Asher, Rowan, and Colton do make an appearance.

Interestingly, this trend shows a greater inclination towards nature-influenced names for girls, with floral names such as Flora, Heather, Jasmine, Lily, and Rose being particularly favored. Seasonal names like Autumn and Summer are also common for girls. In contrast, nature-inspired boys’ names tend to be bolder, often derived from animals, such as Falcon, Wolfe, and Hawk, or more traditional like Cliff and Glen.

This naming trend reflects a growing environmental awareness among parents, who are increasingly choosing names that not only sound pleasant but also carry a deeper, eco-friendly meaning. It suggests a societal shift towards greater environmental consciousness, starting right from the cradle.
