Six Senses will expand its portfolio with a luxury destination in South Carolina expected to be completed by 2026.

Luxury hotel chain Six Senses has announced plans to launch an eco-conscious resort, spa, and residential community across Hilton Head Island, Daufuskie Island, and Bay Point Island in South Carolina by 2026. This ambitious project, titled Six Senses South Carolina Islands, is the result of a collaboration between Whitestone and Redrock Portfolio, Inc., underpinned by a recently signed hotel management agreement. This venture aims to offer a unique blend of luxury and sustainability, designed to enhance the human experience while preserving the delicate ecosystems of these picturesque locations.

The collaboration builds on Six Senses goals of integrating luxury living with environmental stewardship and offers a forward-thinking model for sustainable development along South Carolina’s cherished coastlines.

“After a few years in the making, we’re delighted and excited to be partnering with Whitestone and Redrock in the creation of two special connected communities that speak to the beauty of their environments and honor the people and culture of the area,” Six Senses CEO Neil Jacobs said in a statement. “We have the right elements and energy in place to marry these incredible coastal landscapes with a wellness and sustainability formula that rewilds people back to a connection with nature, each other, and ultimately themselves.”

America’s favorite island

Hilton Head Island, celebrated as America’s Favorite Island for the seventh consecutive year in the 2023 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, will serve as the primary entry point for the eco-friendly resort and residential complex. Guests and residents will be welcomed with bespoke dining and retail outlets, setting the stage for an immersive experience at the waters of the Intercoastal Waterway via hybrid yachts or electric boats.

Daufuskie Island, known for its rich cultural tapestry and environmental dedication, stands as a testament to the project’s regenerative ethos. Spanning 460 acres, this part of the Six Senses South Carolina Islands will feature an array of accommodations, from guest rooms and private suites to beachfront cottages located within the maritime forest. Highlighting the commitment to sustainability and wellness, the island will also offer a Six Senses Spa, an integrated farm, and a championship golf course among other amenities aimed at fostering well-being and connection to nature.

Further cementing the project’s ecological commitment, Bay Point Island will introduce modular, hurricane-resilient villas designed with biophilic principles and state-of-the-art sustainable infrastructure. These residences aim to offer a minimal environmental footprint while providing a luxurious living experience that harmonizes with the island’s unique ecosystems.

Timothy Pitcher, President of Whitestone, emphasized the project’s innovative spirit. “Whitestone strives to nurture and celebrate the critical connection between the human experience and the ecosystems that sustain us,” he said. “The thrill of innovation resonates in every thought and design as we weave a canvas that intertwines regenerative luxury with the roots of our existence. This project is a celebration of Six Senses and Whitestone’s shared vision to seamlessly blend integrated wellness with the untamed beauty of the natural world, redefine living spaces with a commitment to ecological mindfulness, quite literally sowing the seeds of a new era.”

The new resort and residences build on Six Senses’ portfolio of more than two dozen resorts across the globe, all of which emphasize sustainability and conservation efforts. Founded in 1995 by husband-and-wife hoteliers Sonu and Eva Shivadasani, the chain’s environmental focus has made it a leader in sustainable travel.
