10 Sustainable Bike Companies

Share

Besides walking, is there a more sustainable mode of transport than the bicycle? But some bike companies stand above the crowd with exceptional commitments.

The bicycle’s origin traces back to the early 19th century, with the creation of the “running machine” in 1817 by Baron Karl von Drais, a German civil servant. This primitive version, known as the Draisine or hobby horse, lacked pedals and was propelled by the rider’s feet pushing against the ground. But it still marked a significant leap in personal transportation, offering a new way to travel faster than walking.

Fast-forward more than two hundred years, and the bike is still one of the most popular modes of transportation beloved by all ages. The bicycle is also earning its place in the conversation about reducing our dependence on fossil fuels as it’s one of the most sustainable modes of transportation available.

Bicycle companies are also prioritizing sustainable manufacturing — a promising trend in the fight against climate change. By choosing a sustainably built bike, consumers not only reduce their carbon footprint but also support innovative practices in eco-friendly manufacturing.

What makes a bike sustainable?

Traditional bikes are made of steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber. Sustainable bike companies are now exploring materials that are more eco-friendly like bamboo and recycled metals. Bamboo, for instance, is not only sustainable but also provides excellent shock absorption.

The sustainability of a bike also depends on the environmental impact of its supply chain, including how materials are sourced and how the final product is distributed.

The energy consumption and waste generated during the manufacturing process contribute to a bike’s overall environmental footprint. Companies committed to sustainability optimize their manufacturing processes to minimize waste and reduce energy use.

There’s also the end of life for bicycle parts, which should be recyclable or biodegradable at the end of its life. This ensures that the bike doesn’t end up in a landfill, adding to environmental waste.

The environmental impact of biking

Shifting to bicycles for short trips can reduce carbon emissions. Cars are significant contributors to CO2 emissions, especially for short trips where the engine doesn’t reach its most efficient operating temperature. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average passenger vehicle emits about 404 grams of CO2 per mile.

In urban areas, where trips are often less than five miles, substituting car trips with bike rides can lead to substantial reductions in CO2 emissions. If just 5 percent of urban short car trips were replaced with bike rides, it could save millions of tons of CO2 emissions annually. This shift not only benefits the environment but also reduces traffic congestion and improves air quality.
